Weddings

My friends made a movie this summer called 100% Off: A Recession-Era Romance, and had me along to shoot stills during the wedding scene. It was one of my favorite nights of the summer.

It’s also proof you can have a wedding with limited details, a tiny budget, and still have a rollicking good time. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter if you’re eating a 5-tier gourmet cake or a sheet cake from QFC. What it’s about is reveling on a rooftop at sunset, with all your favorite people around you, and shouting to the universe, “I LOVE THIS PERSON AND IT’S A REALLY BIG DEAL!”

They met in college.

She said “yes” before a Belle and Sebastian concert.

Fast forward a year.

They’re getting married.

At the ceremony Tony kept reaching for Brianne’s hand, squeezing it tight during the sermon.

Brianne and Tony said they would do anything for one another, the choir sang, they kissed, and everyone stood on their feet to send them off.

Brianne climbed the hill at Gas Works park and laughed at Tony as he was launched in the air by his best friends.

They looked out over the city of Seattle watching clouds shift over the skyscrapers.

And then, they partied on a boat.

Good eats, good family, good laughs.

Tony picked Bri up during their first dance, lifting her heels of the hardwood floors just long enough to spin her in circles.

The sun set, Brianne and Tony kissed and screamed “cheers” in between a hundred laughs from their friends.

This is the story of the day Brianne & Tony said “I do.”

Thank you Bri & Tony for having me along to document such a special day in your lives. You guys are perfect for each other. I mean it. : )

Thank you to Lucas Anderson for second shooting!

“Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic ’til I’m gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love”

-Leonard Cohen

The first time I stepped into Marlaine’s home, she showed me a book of paintings by Henri Mattise called “Dance Me to the End of Love.” Erick and Marlaine cuddled up on their couch with Molly-dog nestled at their feet. They flipped through each page, reading the lyrics to the song, and finding new details in paintings they’ve seen many times before.

She got up to bring in some German sausage and gouda from the kitchen, and Erick started to tell me more about their wedding plans, and how he fell in love with Marlaine back in DC, at salsa class, before he even knew her name.

A few months later, on a deck over looking east sound on Orcas Island, Marlaine and Erick’s guests read “Dance Me To the End of Love” during their wedding ceremony. Friends flew in from across the country, family came in from all over the world (Germany, Guatemala, ect) and they danced the night away.

It was divine intervention that Marlaine and I met (thank you Google keywords!), and I can say from the second we shared chai, we jived like lost long friends. I feel so grateful I got to document such an important day for two compassionate people who love each other and their friends and family like nothing else matters.

Oh, and all that amazing jewelry you see on the bridesmaids in these photos? Marlaine made it. Catch her and Erick at the Fremont Market on Sundays and you can get it on it too!

High fives to all of Erick and Marlaine’s talented vendors and most of all for my second shooter Brady MacDonald!

Seventy degrees. That was the temperature when Chris, Catherine and I jumped into a borrowed Toyota to roll down an abandoned road on the edge of Lord Hill Farms. As dust swelled off the ground, we drank in the view. A cornfield at sunset. Chris helped Catherine out of the car, while I rocked my face back and forth. Two hot air balloons floated to the right of the dipping sun. Chris and Catherine laughed and giggled like a scene out of Roman Holiday. And I got to be there, taking it all in with eyes, making images with my hands, wearing an ouch-my-cheeks-hurt-smile stretched across my face.

Thank you two, for having me around on such a special day. I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon.
